The Digimon Emperor is only the initial catalyst for a larger, darker narrative that unfolds throughout the series.
Characters
Davis is the leader of the new DigiDestined, similar to Tai, and a passionate soccer player. He has a crush on Corey. While sometimes pompous and incompetent, Davis is fiercely loyal and determined. He was first introduced during the Myotismon arc. His Digimon partner is Veemon. Yoli is the eldest of the new kids and acts as a successor to Izzy, sincere and maternal. Her Digimon partner is Hawkmon. Cody is the youngest, wise beyond his years due to being raised by his grandfather. He has a black-and-white view of the world that evolves throughout the series. His Digimon partner is Armadillomon. Ken is an integral part of the story with a well-developed arc. TK and Kari return from the original series, now older and more experienced, providing guidance to the new DigiDestined. The original DigiDestined also return in supporting roles, mentoring the newer kids.
Series Summary
The series begins with wild Digimon being chased by dark rings and controlled by the Digimon Emperor. Gatomon narrowly escapes, losing its tail ring. TK, now living in Odaiba, meets Yoli and Cody. Davis, also in Kari's class, becomes jealous of TK's interactions with Kari. Tai receives an SOS from Agumon, who is being chased by dark rings and unable to digivolve due to the Digimon Emperor's devices and dark towers. Tai sends an email for help. Kari informs her brother. Izzy, Kari, TK, Davis, Yoli, and Cody go to the digital world. Tai interacts with a Digi-Egg of Courage. Davis, Yoli, and Cody each receive a D-3 digivice. Kari enters the digital world through Izzy's computer, followed by TK and Davis. Davis interacts with the Digi-Egg, and Veemon appears. They are attacked by Monochromon, controlled by the Emperor. Veemon digivolves into Flamedramon using armor digivolution, freeing Monochromon.
Ken's Backstory
Ken grew up with his older brother Sam, who received more attention from their parents. Ken felt jealous and wished for Sam's death. Sam loved Ken and encouraged him. One day, a digivice appeared from Sam's computer, which Sam told Ken not to touch. Ken took a look at the device, and the digivice pulled Ken into the digital world via Sam's computer. Ken met his partner Wormmon and a DigiDestined named Ryo. Ryo and Wormmon battled Millenniumon, and after attaining victory, Millenniumon emitted dark spores around the area, in which one entered Ken through the back of his neck. Ken fell ill and remained in the digital world for around three weeks with Wormmon and Ryo tending to him. Once he got back to Earth, it was as though he never left. Sam returned to his room, finding out that Ken had opened the draw and handled the digivice after all. Ken, frustrated and upset that he was scolded again, wished for Sam to just die, but unfortunately, this time around, Sam actually died. Sam was hit and killed by a car. Ken completely withdrew within himself as he felt immense guilt, believing that he caused Sam's death by his wish. At Sam's funeral, a shady man named Oikawa identified a spore which infested Ken's body.
