Sound Waves and Their Properties [6:53]

Sound waves travel faster in steel than in air at the same temperature because particles in solids are more closely packed with stronger forces. Sound waves are longitudinal waves and require a medium to travel. The speed of sound is 332 meters per second. Sound travels fastest in solids, then liquids, and slowest in gases. In a vacuum, the speed of sound is zero. Amplitude is the maximum distance from the mean line, and greater amplitude means louder sound, measured in decibels. Wavelength is one complete cycle, and frequency is the number of vibrations per second.
