The DRDO has developed India's next-generation hypersonic glide vehicle named 'Dhoni'. DRDO, established in 1958 with headquarters in New Delhi, is currently chaired by Dr. Samir V Kamat. Dhoni is a hypersonic missile, meaning it travels at speeds exceeding Mach 5, where Mach 1 equals the speed of sound (343 metres per second in air). As a hypersonic glide vehicle, Dhoni is designed to travel at speeds over Mach 5 and has a range of 6,000 to 10,000 kilometres. Subsonic missiles have speeds lower than the speed of sound, supersonic missiles range from Mach 1 to Mach 5, and hypersonic missiles exceed Mach 5.
