He is recognized as a national hero of Indonesia and was given the title Tuanku Salamaka by the people of South Sulawesi. He began his religious education at age 15 and later became a Mufti in the Banten Sultanate. After performing the Hajj in 1644, he studied with prominent scholars in Mecca, Medina, and Yemen. In 1684, he was arrested and exiled to Sri Lanka, and later to South Africa in 1693, where he continued to preach and gained many followers. Nelson Mandela referred to him as one of Africa's best sons. His notable works include Zubdatul Asrar, and Safinatun Najah, which remains popular in many pesantren.

He received his early education from his father in Palembang and Kedah, Malaysia, and furthered his studies in Patani (Thailand) before going to Mecca and Medina. Syekh Nuruddin Muhammad bin Ali Bin Hasan bin Muhammad Hamid Ar-Raniri Al-Quraisy was believed to be born in the late 16th century in Ranir, Gujarat, India, and died on September 21, 1658. He came to Aceh in 1637 and became an advisor to the Sultanate. He studied Malay in Aceh and deepened his religious knowledge during a pilgrimage to Mecca. Upon returning from Mecca, he found that the influence of Syamsudin Asmatrani was very large in Aceh. Because he did not agree with one of the streams of Sufism, Syekhrudin moved to the Malay Peninsula to deepen his religious knowledge and Malay. In 1637 AD he returned to Aceh. At that time, Syekh Syamsudin Sumatera had died. Thanks to his extensive knowledge, Sultan Iskandar Tani gave him the position left by Syamsudin. Nurutin served as the code of Al Malik Al Adil, namely the Grand Mufti, plus the position of Sheikh at the Baiturrahman Mosque.
